Citi Handlowy Foundation
The Leopold Kronenberg Foundation at Citi Handlowy was established on the 125th anniversary of the opening of Bank Handlowy w Warszawie S.A. Through it, Citi Handlowy implements the largest nationwide and local programs in the country, which are an expression of the Bank's social responsibility.
The Foundation supports activities for the public good in the areas of education and local development.
Our Mission
The mission of the Citi Handlowy Foundation is to support activities for the public good through the development of education, particularly economic and financial education, the promotion of culture and cultural heritage, and the support of initiatives in health protection and social welfare, with a special emphasis on employee volunteering. Economic Education
The Citi Handlowy Foundation actively supports the development of financial and digital education by implementing activities that increase access to reliable economic knowledge and develop the competencies necessary for conscious functioning in the modern economy. The Foundation is involved in creating and promoting expert knowledge, initiates and supports research on key socio-economic challenges, and co-creates economic reports and analyses that provide valuable data and recommendations for representatives of business, public administration, the scientific community, and social organizations.
An important element of the Foundation's activity is also its active participation in the most important events dedicated to the economy and finance, such as the European Financial Congress (EKF) and the European Forum for New Ideas (EFNI). Presence at these forums enables the exchange of experiences with leaders of economic life, experts, representatives of public administration, and the academic community, as well as participation in discussions concerning the directions of development of the Polish and European economies.
Citi Employee Volunteer Program
The program was launched in June 2005 and has since grown into one of the largest programs of its kind in Poland. The Citi Handlowy Foundation encourages Citi employees to share their knowledge, experience, and skills and to support various social initiatives. During their volunteer activities, Citi volunteers can benefit from a range of facilities, including the possibility of receiving an additional day off per year for social work, liability and accident insurance, or reimbursement of travel, food, and accommodation costs incurred as part of their volunteer work.
Citi Global Community Day
This is an international Citi project that engages employees in activities for local communities around the world.
As part of Citi Global Community Day, Citi employees, joined by their families, friends, and anyone willing, try to solve specific social problems that exist in the communities where they live.
An important element of this initiative is a grant competition in which over 100 leaders – Citi employees – get involved each year. This is an opportunity for them to implement their own ideas for a volunteer project.
Every year, the involvement of Citi volunteers in Poland in Citi Global Community Day is one of the largest in the world.
The "Become Santa's Assistant" Campaign
As part of the campaign, Citi employees get involved in holiday actions for people in need. Activities include packing parcels for the needy, dedicated collections, or fairs from which the income is donated to charity. Citi volunteers also organize holiday meetings with beneficiaries of their choice.
An important element of this campaign is a dedicated holiday platform where Citi volunteers can reserve letters to Santa from children in care and educational facilities, thus fulfilling their individual dreams.
Skills-based volunteering
Within these activities, Citi employees engage individually, sharing their knowledge, experience, and skills to support various target groups, including children, students, seniors, and young entrepreneurs.
Integration trips with volunteering
This is a project that complements company integration trips with elements of team volunteer work for local communities. During these trips, volunteers integrate while helping others. The recipients of their help are often care and educational facilities, social welfare homes, or animal shelters. The scope of work is very broad and includes, among others, renovation, cleaning, and gardening work, as well as activities with the beneficiaries.
Cultural Heritage Protection
The Professor Aleksander Gieysztor Award
The Professor Aleksander Gieysztor Award is one of the most prestigious honors in Poland in the field of cultural heritage protection. Since 2000, the Citi Handlowy Foundation has been honoring individuals and institutions that have made an exceptional contribution to the preservation, protection, and popularization of Polish cultural heritage—both within the country and abroad. The award recognizes both innovative projects and the long-term activities of individuals and institutions whose work strengthens historical awareness, protects tangible and intangible heritage, and builds a sense of responsibility for its preservation for future generations.
Over nearly three decades, the Award has gathered distinguished laureates—historians, museologists, patrons of culture, social activists, and institutions whose activities have had a lasting impact on the protection of Polish heritage. Past recipients of the Award include Anda Rottenberg, Krystyna Zachwatowicz-Wajda and Andrzej Wajda, Elżbieta and Krzysztof Penderecki, Prof. Jerzy Limon, Prof. Jerzy Hausner, and Teresa and Andrzej Starmach.
The distinction is also an expression of the Citi Handlowy Foundation's belief that caring for heritage is the foundation for building identity, fostering dialogue between generations, and taking responsibility for the future.
The patron of the Award is Professor Aleksander Gieysztor—a historian, medievalist, and one of the most eminent authorities in the field of cultural heritage protection. His scholarly work serves as an inspiration for subsequent generations of individuals working for the benefit of culture.
Building Social Resilience
The Foundation carries out activities aimed at building a resilient, conscious, and engaged society. Its task is to support initiatives that strengthen the ability of communities to respond to the challenges of the modern world and increase their safety and resilience.
The Foundation is actively involved in aid efforts during crisis and emergency situations. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, it supported individuals and institutions affected by the crisis. In 2022, it conducted activities for refugees from Ukraine, facilitating their integration and adaptation in Poland. It also joined in helping those affected by the floods in Lower Silesia.
An important area of the Foundation's activity is education. Organized training in cybersecurity and countering disinformation helps develop the competencies necessary for safe functioning in the digital world and the conscious use of information.
The Foundation also supports initiatives for diversity and social integration. It implements projects that strengthen the professional activity of women, especially those who combine motherhood with career development. In parallel, it carries out activities promoting the integration of refugees with Polish society, supporting the building of open and strong local communities.
An important pillar of the Foundation's activity is the protection of the natural environment. A healthy environment is one of the foundations of a resilient society, which is why the Foundation implements ecological projects both independently and in cooperation with renowned international partners, including UNEP/GRID-Warsaw – a center cooperating with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). These initiatives focus on ecological education, sustainable development, and building environmental awareness.
